Rain operates around the world and services global businesses and platforms with embedded financial products and services. We work with some of the biggest businesses in the world and serving them means servicing their end users around the world. Getting there usually means expanding our licensing coverage either through direct force projection or through strategic partnerships. Once we’re in a market this work transitions to getting our products and services up and running to ship local products.

Market Expansion is a high impact, small, SWAT-like team that owns launching local financial products in each of our target geographies. We like to work in person and we work on every market Rain decides to enter. As part of this team, you will go exotic places, meet exotic people, and build exciting products.

The team is, by definition, heavily cross functional requiring team members to work with Product, Legal, Compliance, and Go To Market.

We are accountable for the outcome, not for the project plan. The model is deliberately temporary in each market. A launcher deploys into a market, launches the product, hires and hands over to a local GM, and moves to the next one.

A market launch is a complex project that runs 3 to 12 months, touches around twelve cross functional capabilities and more than ten internal functions.

What you’ll do

Be Global: Spend significant time, in person, in each market you launch.
Be Autonomous: Own a market launch end to end, from the point the entry decision is made to the point the business runs without you.
Operate Across the Company: Work with our legal team to manage the local regulatory and legal processes for licence expansion or transfer where we go direct.
Define and execute the operationalization strategy for each market, meaning the specific decisions about how Rain's technology, team and systems get deployed in the local market.
Identify and solve blockers to quick market launch.
Coordinate and drive a 100 day plan for each market, including the workstream owners, the sequencing, the reporting cadence, and the escalation path when a workstream slips.
Identify and hire the key local roles, usually a country lead and their first two or three hires, and ramp them up / coach them through the first few weeks at their roles.
Detect what is missing before it becomes a problem. Additional licences, gaps and remediations that nobody has scoped.
Own and improve the playbook.

You are likely to succeed if you have:

Background: roughly 6 to 10 years of experience in strategy consulting, private equity operations, or an operating role in a regulated fintech or payments business.
Communication skills: you can independently write high-quality formal documents, and represent Rain in high-stakes meetings (e.g., with regulators, investors, partners, customers…).
Business and tech acumen: can work through complexity across different workstreams (e.g., pricing, tech, legal, compliance) identifying what matters in a context full of noise.
Project management experience: you have driven complex projects to completion, particularly when task owners don’t directly report to you.
Practicality and effectiveness: you get things done quickly despite challenges, and are able to deliver a high amount of output when required.
Intellectual curiosity: you are eager to go deep into technical topics, particularly when the response is not obvious.
Desire to travel: you are interested in spending significant time in person in the target markets to launch the product, hire a local team, and solve problems.
Location: you are based in New York or Madrid, or have a willingness to relocate.
Languages: you speak native / fluent English.

Bonus attributes:

Direct experience with regulatory approval processes, market expansion, post-merger integration, on either side of the table.
Experience in payments, card issuing, e-money or banking, whether at an operator, a regulator, an adviser or a network.
Having expanded a business into a new geography, including taking a product or a programme live in a new jurisdiction.
Knowledge of the payment / crypto regulatory landscape for payments and digital assets.
Familiarity with stablecoins and how onchain tech interacts with traditional payments.
Additional languages, particularly Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese or Arabic.
Experience building a function from scratch, including hiring the team who came after you.
